More than a vertical pipe

A Downpipe System That Moves Water Where It Needs to Go

A downpipe forms part of a connected drainage path: roof catchment, gutter, outlet, downpipe and the visible existing stormwater connection. A restriction or unsuitable detail at any stage can contribute to overflow, leaking joints, staining or water collecting where it should not.

That is why we look beyond the damaged section. We consider the roof area, gutter and outlet, number and position of downpipes, pipe route and the visible existing stormwater connection before recommending the scope.

Visible Cause CheckedWe look for damage, blockages, poor support and restricted outlets.
Scope Explained ClearlyYou receive a practical recommendation based on the visible system.

Material and profile choices

Metal and PVC Downpipe Options

The best option depends on the existing roof drainage system, the route of the pipe, the property and the agreed finish. We install and repair common metal and PVC downpipe configurations used around Sydney homes.

Metal Downpipes

Coated metal downpipes provide a strong, neat profile and can coordinate with many metal gutter and roof systems, with rectangular and round configurations available. Service life depends on the coating, exposure, material compatibility and the condition of joints and cut edges.

Visible joins, brackets, offsets and corrosion are checked before repair or replacement is recommended.

PVC Downpipes

PVC is lightweight and corrosion-resistant, with fittings available for a range of configurations, including commonly used round downpipes.

Suitability depends on size, support, route, fittings and the existing drainage connection.

Signs worth investigating

When a Downpipe Needs Attention

Not every overflow starts with a dirty gutter. These visible symptoms can point to a restricted, damaged or poorly performing part of the downpipe system.

01

Overflow Near the Outlet

Water backing up at the gutter outlet can indicate a blockage, outlet restriction or inadequate drainage path.

02

Leaking Joints or Offsets

Failed or separated joins can release water against walls, fascia or paths during rainfall.

03

Rust, Splits or Cracks

Corrosion in metal or cracks in PVC may make a local repair impractical, depending on the surrounding condition.

04

Loose Brackets or Movement

Movement can place stress on joins and leave the pipe out of alignment with the gutter outlet or drain connection.

05

Crushed or Damaged Sections

Impact damage can reduce the internal opening and restrict the flow of water through the pipe.

06

Pooling or Wall Staining

Water around the base or marks near the pipe can signal leakage, discharge or downstream drainage issues.

How Your Gutter and Downpipe System Manages Rainwater

Reliable roof drainage depends on each visible part working together, from the roof catchment and gutter outlet through to the property’s existing stormwater connection.

Diagram of roof runoff passing through the gutter outlet and downpipe to an existing stormwater connection, marked 1 to 4

Roof Catchment

Rain falling across the roof is directed towards the gutter. The area feeding each section affects how much water the system needs to manage.

Gutter & Outlet

The gutter and outlet collect and direct roof water into the downpipe. Restricted or poorly positioned outlets can limit flow before water reaches the pipe.

Downpipe Route

Size, bends, offsets, joints and brackets influence how reliably the above-ground downpipe carries water down the building.

Existing Stormwater Connection

Where included in the quote, we connect the above-ground downpipe to a suitable existing, accessible stormwater point.

Scope note: Underground stormwater drainage and excavation are not included. Suspected below-ground faults may require an appropriately licensed drainage professional.

A considered transition into the downpipe

Rainheads for Suitable Downpipe Installations

Many downpipes connect directly to a gutter outlet without a rainhead. Where the roof-drainage layout calls for one, a rainhead can receive water from a gutter outlet and, where designed for it, from an upper-level downpipe before directing it into the downpipe below. Its size, inlet arrangement and any overflow provision must suit the expected flow and site conditions.

A rainhead is not required for every downpipe and will not, by itself, correct an undersized gutter, restricted outlet or blocked underground drain.

Selected for the SystemWe consider roof catchment, expected flow, inlet position and overflow requirements before recommending one.
Clear Installation ScopeWhere quoted, we install the rainhead and above-ground downpipe connection. Underground stormwater drainage is not included.

Repair, Replace or Add a Downpipe?

The right approach depends on the cause of the problem and the condition of the surrounding system. We avoid presenting every issue as a full replacement.

Repair

A local repair may suit an isolated leak, loose bracket or damaged fitting when the surrounding pipe and connections remain sound.

Replace

Replacement may be more practical where a section is badly corroded, split, crushed, repeatedly leaking or no longer reliable.

New Installation

An additional or reconfigured downpipe may be considered when the visible layout, outlet position and agreed drainage scope support that recommendation.

A CLEAR PATH FORWARD

How the Process Works

We assess the visible downpipe system, explain the likely cause and provide an agreed repair or installation scope.

Four-step service process from property details and assessment to quote and scheduling

Tell Us What You Have Noticed

Share the suburb and symptoms. If you have photos taken safely, you can send them after we respond.

Site Assessment

We review the visible downpipe, outlets, brackets, offsets and accessible connection points.

Written Scope & Free Quote

We distinguish visible pipe damage from outlet or downstream issues and recommend a practical scope.

Approve & Schedule

After approval, we complete the agreed work and check visible joins and supports.

If additional work becomes apparent, it is discussed and agreed separately before proceeding.

I recently had roofing work completed by Hugo and his team, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. From the initial inspection through to completion, Hugo was professional, honest, and transparent every step of the way. Communication was excellent, with clear explanations of the work required, realistic timelines, and no hidden surprises. The team arrived on time, worked efficiently, and maintained a high standard of workmanship throughout the project. What stood out most was Hugo’s integrity and attention to detail. He took the time to answer all my questions, kept me informed during the process, and ensured everything was completed to a very high standard. It’s rare to find a contractor who is both highly skilled and genuinely focused on customer satisfaction. I would highly recommend Hugo and his company to anyone looking for reliable, professional, and quality roofing services. Thank you for making the entire process smooth, stress-free, and delivering such an outstanding result.

Due to poor sealant on the roof of our 49 units Hugo and his team had to do a lot of work replacing roof sheeting and all box gutters. Upon completion the leaks are gone an excellent job. His team are polite, very comfortable to have on site and efficient. I strongly recommend Easy Gutters to anyone searching for roof and gutter repairs. We now have a maintenance contract with them as a preventative measure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, some isolated leaks, loose brackets and damaged fittings can be repaired when the surrounding pipe remains sound. Heavily corroded, cracked or crushed sections may be better replaced.
The restriction may be at the gutter outlet, inside an offset, lower in the pipe or within the downstream drainage connection. The gutter fall, outlet capacity and number or position of downpipes can also affect performance.
Yes. We work with common metal and PVC configurations and recommend the material and profile that suit the existing roof drainage system and agreed scope.
Common metal options include 100 Ă— 50 mm, 100 Ă— 75 mm and 90 mm round profiles. We may also work with 100 Ă— 100 mm where it suits the application. PVC is available in several sizes, with 90 mm round being common. The suitable option depends on the property and visible drainage system.
Often, yes. A section can sometimes be replaced when the remaining pipe, fittings and supports are serviceable and the new section can be connected reliably.
We can assess accessible blockages within the visible roof drainage system. If the issue appears to be within below-ground stormwater drainage, separate specialist drainage work may be required.
It may help in a suitable layout, but overflow can have several causes. We first consider the roof catchment, gutter and outlet, existing downpipes and the visible existing stormwater connection before recommending an additional pipe.
